Packing your belongings for storage might seem straightforward, but doing it properly can save you time and space and protect your items from damage. As a self-storage expert, I’ve helped countless customers prepare their possessions for both short-term and long-term storage. Here are my top tips in brief to ensure your items stay pristine while stored at our self storage facility.
1. Start with a Plan
Inventory Your Items: Before you begin, make a list of everything you plan to store. This helps in estimating the number and size of boxes you’ll need and ensures nothing gets forgotten.
Gather Packing Supplies: Stock up on sturdy boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, markers, and labels. Opt for high-quality materials to provide the best protection.
2. Use the Right Boxes
Uniform Box Sizes: Using boxes of the same size makes stacking easier and more stable. It also maximizes the use of your storage unit’s space.
Specialty Boxes: For items like dishes, glassware, and clothing, consider using boxes specifically designed for them, such as dish packs and wardrobe boxes.
We offer a selection of moving boxes for sale.
3. Protect Fragile Items
Wrap Individually: Wrap fragile items like glassware, ceramics, and electronics individually with bubble wrap or packing paper.
Fill Empty Spaces: Use packing peanuts or crumpled paper to fill gaps in boxes to prevent items from shifting during transport.
4. Disassemble Large Items
Furniture: Take apart large furniture pieces like beds, tables, and shelves. Keep screws and small parts in labeled bags taped to the corresponding item.
Appliances: Clean and dry appliances thoroughly. Leave doors slightly ajar to prevent mold and odors.
5. Pack Smartly
Heavy Items in Small Boxes: Pack books, tools, and other heavy items in smaller boxes for easier lifting and to prevent boxes from breaking.
Light Items in Large Boxes: Use larger boxes for lighter, bulkier items like linens, pillows, and blankets.
6. Label Everything
Detailed Labels: Clearly label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. This makes unpacking much more manageable.
Fragile Stickers: Mark boxes containing delicate items with “Fragile” and “This Side Up” to ensure they’re handled with care.
7. Use Protective Covers
Furniture Covers: Protect mattresses, sofas, and chairs with plastic covers or moving blankets to shield them from dust and moisture.
Mattress Bags: Invest in mattress bags to keep your bed clean and protected during storage.
8. Maximize Space
Utilize Hollow Spaces: Store smaller items inside larger ones, like placing kitchen utensils inside pots and pans.
Stack Strategically: Place heavier boxes at the bottom and lighter ones on top. Leave a small walkway in your unit for easy access.
9. Consider the Seasons
If you’re storing sensitive items like electronics, artwork, or antique furniture, be sure and pack with extra care to protect your belongings from changes in temperatures and humidity.
10. Don’t Store Perishables or Hazardous Materials
Avoid Perishables: Food and other perishable items can attract pests and should not be stored.
Hazardous Materials: Items like gasoline, propane tanks, chemicals, and fireworks are prohibited. Check with the storage facility for a list of restricted items.
11. Secure Your Belongings
Lock Up: Use a high-quality lock for your storage unit to add an extra layer of security.
Insurance: Consider storage insurance for added peace of mind in case of unforeseen events.
12. Ask for Professional Advice
When in doubt, consult the storage facility staff. At Economy Storage Waldorf, we’re always here to help you choose the right unit size, packing materials, and provide tips tailored to your specific needs.
